Kenya's athletics chief accused of seeking bribes

The head of the Kenya Athletics Federation, Isaac Mwangi is facing allegations that he sought bribes from two athletes in the country currently suspended for doping.

Joy Sakari and Francisca Koki Manunga are serving a four-year ban for doping at the 2015 world championships but claim the CEO asked them each for 2.5 million Kenyan shillings, an equivalent of $24,000, in an effort to reduce their suspensions.

Mwangi has however refuted the allegations and denied ever meeting the athletes since the association has no power to reduce the athlete’s bans.

These are the latest allegations facing the country after three other officials of the association were suspended in the doping scandal facing the country.

They were accused of subversion of the anti-doping process and for improper diversion of funds, charges they have denied.

More than 30 athletes have already been banned for doping, in a country that has always thrived in worldwide athletics.
